WWW and Intellectual Property Rights

Copyright on the web is probably something that doesn't even come in
to most people's minds as they browse. There's been some recent
interest in Eri's wonderful artwork on the SIPB server, enough that
there is now an "artrights.html" (or something like that) with details
on the copyright involved...

What if "copying" is not involved? What if I put together a document
with inlined images that point to other servers?

I'm not being hypothetical either; take a look at the sample resume'
under my home page. Is that fair use? (in that case, it probably is;
the Cygnus one is ok, as a current employee, the Tech one is more
questionable... and the HP web site didn't have any good single gifs :-)
Note that there is a seperate issue of use of corporate trademark.
