Scope of Position / Summary:
This position assists with the design and development of security-related
components of NCSA's state of the art software tools. It includes
responsibility for providing up-to-date expertise in security technologies
to several NCSA groups, as well as providing software development talent
for particular security-critical projects. These tasks involve protocol
design, source code development, documentation, and testing with a variety
of hardware platforms and programming languages. Coordinating with
external collaborators, managing student programmers, and giving
educational presentations may also be involved.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design of security-related features in various NCSA
software projects
- Write and test program code to implement support for security features in
specified NCSA software projects, using languages such as C and Java on
Unix and/or Windows platforms
- Maintain a concerted effort to follow recent developments in Internet
software security, including the actions of relevant standards bodies,
commercial entities, and other groups within NCSA
- Attend technical conferences and consortium meetings as requested
- Assume some responsibility for project development, potentially including
supervision of other staff
- Prepare and present demonstrations of current Web security technology to
audiences both internal and external to NCSA, such as at conferences and
workshops and for NCSA visitors
Required Education and Experience::
* Bachelor's degree required, preferably in computer science or related field.
* Two years related work experience is preferred.
* Training with workstations and system programming on Unix or Windows platforms
* Understanding of cryptography in practice, and preferably also in theory
* Experience with cryptographic software
* Understanding of Internet protocols such as HTTP
Key Skills / Knowledge:
* Broad practical knowledge of various multi-platform machines and
software.
* Excellent interpersonal relations skills.
* Ability to communicate clearly to all types of audiences - from the
inexperienced to highly technical users.
* Ability to work on several tasks simultaneously.
Preferred Experience:
- Prior programming experience and proven expertise in the security area.
- Familiarity with common security technologies such as Kerberos and PGP,
communication security protocols such as S-HTTP, HTTP authentication and
SSL, and security-related data formats such as X.509, ASN.1, and PKCS
- Experience in public speaking and/or teaching activities.
