Java applets talking through firewalls

Hi,
I am writing some Java chat applets which are supposed to talk to any
client on the web. I am using Netscape Navigator 3.0. My problem is the
applets can't talk to clients sitting behind firewalls. They can
download my applet but it cannot connect to its originating host i.e. my
chat server. Applets are throwing a security exception.
Is there a way I can make this work ?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
