I never ask why I continue to study Klingon. Whenever anybody asks why, I f=
ind myself thinking ram meqmeyand move on.=0A=0AUltimately, people must lea=
rn to accept that some people have incredibly active brains which require t=
he constant stimulation and challenge of learning languages - and chances a=
re, if you know English and Klingon, you are likely to want to broaden your=
struggle against the Great Enemy, boredom, to include the study of Latin, =
Japanese, Russian or Greek, just because.=0A=0AI have never struggled to ju=
stify my choice to embrace the life of a Klingonist, either. I've always to=
ld people that everybody has at least one thing that they really love. It c=
ould be anything: baking cakes, playing football, poker, hypnotising people=
for fun, singing, playing a musical instrument ... or it could be somethin=
g serious and worthwhile such as learning another language. Any other langu=
age.=0A=0AIt is very difficult for monoglots to understand what would motiv=
ate anyone to learn another language, at all; let alone to want to learn an=
y language for fun. It's like mathophobics wondering why geeks such as I ge=
t excited over the latest news article about prime numbers, or non-science =
geeks pondering why I get excited to learn about a new transuranic element =
which has been added to the Periodic Table.=0A=0AIf I have learned one thin=
g, it is this: you cannot argue against willing ignorance. You can only tra=
nscend the gaps in your own knowledge through continued study, and keep you=
r sharp blades from rusting. What other people do is irrelevant, as long as=
they realise that their judgment of you is also irrelevant. All you can do=
is to say that you will never be such a person yourself, and strive to rem=
ain always better than them.=0A=0A=0A=0AOn Monday, 2 June 2014, 4:56, lojmI=
