That certainly makes one thing clearer, which may help with the rest.

I think it's probably meant as loDnal.  Just because rarity of female 
captains would make someone of that era assume that she was the mate. 
But I like your defiance of that stereotype.

Yeah, that's why I suggested SuD. I am reading the English on these 
chapters now, after the initial pass.

I don't object to it. Who knows what the object of gamble should be 
if any, but it's certainly understandable.
