I can't suggest a general strategy. All of my mental crutches are
specific to a particular pair.

Actually, what seems to help me the most is simply to listen to the -w
word repeatedly and get its meaning fixed in my memory. I'm
specifically trying NOT to treat them as related pairs, so I don't get
the accidental association of the two words. (Imagining {Saw} being
spoken by Jay Leno doing an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression might or
might not be useful, but that's how it's unfolding in my mind.)
