{QanwI'} might be a better word for a bumper, fender, etc. On the BOP
poster {tal QanwI'} "cannon guard" refers to some protective armor plating
around the cannon. Okrand has also used {Qan} "protect" WRT a d'k tahg:

[the blades] providing both a hand guard... SP2
OTOH every known example of {'av} "guard" and {'avwI'} refer to people.
