Perhaps I didn't make myself clear about the p. 65 examples. The fact
that they *do* have a definite subject indicates very strongly that there
is nothing special about -meH verbs, i.e. that they function in the normal
way, with the normal affixes and all. The indefinite subject usage would
be an *exception* from the normal way verbs are used, and so it requires
special evidence. The point is that *the* section describing -meH does
*not* provide special evidence, it shows the verbs being used in the
mundane way. In other words, the section doesn't just leave the question
open-ended, it explicitly points to an answer by providing a paradigm in
the examples, and thus weakens the case for indefinite subject. So, it's
not a counterexample in the sense of "It says you can't turn left!", just
in the sense of "It says you should turn right!". Which, as I was claiming,
leaves us in a somewhat ambiguous state of affairs. It would be tough to
come down definitive on either side.
Mark's observations on the "When will the water be hot" sentence are right
on the mark. Everyone should read them again!
