When I first heard the term "Ferengi" on TKD, it suggested the English
word "ferocious" or "feral" to me and the facial expression each time the
word was stated suggested a rather Italian urge to toss in a negative hand
gesture. This was before they showed what they actually looked like. Like the
Klingons, the Ferengi culture and character have become much more interesting
now that they have something else to do than just be evil. Even the
Cardassians are given credit for a little complexity. That's one of the
things I like about TNG and DS9. They may start out with villain races, but
they usually revisit them to give them a reason to have such a conflict with
humanity, instead of the old "just because they are bad people" stuff more
common in TOS.

Even the Borg came out somewhat understandable. Their coexistence has
become tolerable. Now, if they can avoid stupid plots like the one with the
ear-wicks that stuck their tails out from people's necks and turned
Federation Central into pod city...
