I know. Things change=2C though=2C and recently they seem to have changed f=
airly substantially and for the better.

It's not just qunnoQ. It's Karen=2C and 'aQroS=2C and Chelsea=2C and perhap=
s others who haven't stuck their hands up yet. I'm actually surprised it's =
as *high* as 308 (or 170=2C if you want to use that metric)=3B there are ma=
ybe twenty or thirty who post on a regular basis=2C and even accounting for=
the old hands who might still be getting the list traffic=2C that still le=
aves quite a lot of people. Four beginners have stuck their hands up in the=
last month=2C qunnoQ posting regularly=2C Karen a couple times a week. Tha=
t's enough=2C for my part. Hell=2C I fervently believe that one is enough. =
We're not such a big community that we can afford to talk about scale of de=
mand. If there's even one beginner who is dedicated enough to post to the l=
ist=2C surely there must be even one intermediate speaker who can assist th=
em as BG=2C and have the opportunity to develop their own skills as a Kling=
on language speaker (and teacher) in the process.
Even just in general=2C the list is also much more active now than it was b=
ack in the late 2000s - there was a while there where all traffic=2C not ju=
st beginners=2C dropped close to zero. The recent Star Trek movies have don=
e some to help put Klingon back in the public eye=2C and if we can ride the=
Abrams wave for a little while longer=2C we may be able to draw more.

The initial idea motivating the creation of the BG position was to foster a=
nd encourage beginners. The fact that serving as BG is a brilliant way to i=
mprove one's own Hol is a side benefit=2C of sorts. I do like your idea abo=
ut having the advanced speakers working to pull the intermediate ones up in=
a more systematic way=2C and that's something I think we definitely should=
explore. I'd be keen to participate in such a system. But at the same time=
=2C having an "instead of" focus on advanced speakers teaching intermediate=
speakers will result in the few beginners we do have being left behind. Th=
at's emphatically bad for our community.

I can't agree that anything "in lieu of" is a good approach to take. We nee=
d to be thinking "as well as". The growth in the Facebook community is fant=
astic and beyond anything I'd imagined=3B we definitely need to think some =
more about how to develop the community there=2C too. But the list still li=
ves=2C relatively small though it may be=2C and is still frequented by begi=
nners=2C relatively few though they may be. We need to continue making our =
resources available on every front we're humanly capable of.
