In addition=2C for HoD qunnoQ's information=2C it's important also to know =
that most of the apparent exceptions listed in TKD are there simply as look=
up aids (for instance=2C {jubbe'} "be mortal"=2C {HeghmoH} "be fatal")=2C a=
nd {lI'be'} falls into that group as far as we know. Marc has addressed thi=
s idea explicitly in a posting to the MSN Newsgroup:
"For the most part=2C entries in The Klingon Dictionary (and also in the ad=
dendum in Klingon For the Galactic Traveler) that consist of verb + suffix =
are indeed just that=2C verb + suffix. For example=2C one entry in the Dict=
ionary is pujmoH "weaken." This is really puj "be weak" and the suffix -moH=
"cause" (thus "weaken" is "cause to be weak"). Since -moH is a Type 4 suff=
ix=2C if a suffix of Type 1=2C 2=2C or 3 is to be used (such as -chuq "each=
other" [Type 1] or -nIS "need" [Type 2])=2C it would precede the Type 4 -m=
oH=3B for example=2C pujchuqmoH "they weaken each other" or pujnISmoH "he/s=
he needs to weaken [somebody]." It is=2C of course=2C possible to add the s=
uffix -moH to lots of verbs=3B not all of the verb + -moH combinations are =
listed in the Dictionary as distinct entries. The ones that are listed are =
there as much as a matter of convenience for the user as anything else. For=
example=2C there is an entry for "commit suicide" just in case anyone want=
s to look that word up=3B but the Klingon equivalent is simply HoH'egh=2C l=
iterally "kill oneself" (HoH "kill" plus Type 1 verb suffix -'egh "oneself"=
)." (Okrand to MSN Newsgroup=2C 30 Nov 1997)
So despite the gloss=2C {HeghmoH} (for instance) isn't an adjectival verb a=
s the gloss "be fatal" might suggest=3B it's a verb-suffix compound. {bIHeg=
hmoH} means "you cause [an unspecified object] to die" - more simply=2C "yo=
u cause [things] to die"=2C or "you are fatal". Marc does go on to note=2C =
though=2C that {lo'laH} *is* an exception=2C and despite its superficial si=
milarity to {lo'} + {-laH} (from which it may be descended)=2C it is indeed=
a disyllabic and indivisible root in ta' Hol. So it'd be {jIlo'laHchoH} "I=
become valuable"=2C {Dalo'laHmoH} "you cause it to be valuable". {Dalo'moH=
laH} means something entirely different=2C "you can cause [someone] to use =
it".
