Surprisingly, my description is different again:
My main definition: fanatical core of a group; the most dedicated of a grou=
p
My additional aids to help me find the word in the dictionary: core
member*; essence*; part of something, essential*; heart*
I understand that it describes a person or a group of people who are indeed
the biggest fans or experts among a larger group. I'm not sure if it could
be used for an inanimate object which is the most important in a group of
objects (like the highest peak in a mountain range).
