"Abandon hope" strongly implies a change of state from hope to 
hopelessness; {-choH} is called for here. Also, though I don't speak 
Italian, the phrase is commonly translated "abandon ALL hope" or "ALL 
hope abandon," which suggests {-chu'} is useful.
