Have no default route.
Let ipppd create one automatically to the ppp link only when
the ppp link comes up. If it is like pppd, you have to put the keyword
'defaultroute' in one of the config files for ipppd.
Have no default route for your local lan either, just a simple route
for the subnet with the right subnet mask.
When the ppp link is up, check your routes (route -n) and your ip
numbers (ifconfig).
You should be able to ping specific IP numbers then.
If you cannot ping by name, you need to check /etc/hosts,
/etc/resolv.conf and /etc/host.conf.
Happy hunting. It's almost in the bag.
