installation via ftp on laptop?

hello!
i got my new laptop.. trying to install via ftp on ethernet, have done
this on my desktop before, during installation it automatically detected
my 3com vortex card. but, while installing on my laptop, it doesnt even
ask if i have pcmcia adaptors, and doesnt detect my xircom combo ethernet
card so i can install via ftp. any suggestions?
