Here is another followup. I think its all related to the symbolic links
not being replicated correctly since the files are on a FAT partition...
Is that the problem? If so, that would make the only possible way to
install RH5.2 be via CD-ROM if you don't already have some form of Linux
installed.

Ok, here's how it goes...
Installation of RedHat 5.2
Booting from a diskette with one HDD in the system - FAT (C, active) has
the
RedHat installation set on it.
1. Boot off Linux boot diskette
2. Choose language, etc., and choose installation from HDD
3. Insert supplemental diskette
4. Choose Install instead of Upgrade
5. Choose Custom for installation type
6. Choose no SCSI adapters
7. Use Disk Druid to make partitions... 1 - 50 MB SWAP, 1 - 700 MB root "/"
Linux native partition type
8. Choose partition for swap
9. Prompt to select partition where RedHat/RPMS and RedHat/base directories
are. I choose /dev/hda1 (this is C drive, FAT, 1.3GB. I use "/" for the
Directory, since the RedHat directory is at C:\RedHat.
10. error message "Error Opening Directory"
It is finding the structure, I think, since giving it a bogus directory
name
like "/beavis" causes the system to generate "Device hda1 does not appear
to
contain a RedHat installation tree".
There is probably something wrong with the tree. Maybe files or
directories
are missing? I noticed that during the download there were a lot of
symbolic links in the tree on the site. These got translated to files that
were the object of those links. The files ended up in the directories
where
the links existed. I assume that this was just to make sure that you got
the current files. I can provide the tree structure I have on my system if
there is anyone with the patience or the know to tell me what is missing.
Is case going to make or break this? I think that it is right, but I
cannot
seem to find any other causes.
I have ordered the CD set with the book and all that jazz, so maybe I am
wasing your time, but I am still interested for future reference, what I
have done wrong.
Thanks!
