I came late to this discussion but I think I can add something to it. I
recently got ADSL, it consists of an ADSL modem which connects to your
NIC via a cross-over twisted pair cable.
I have a hub, which I had connected to my Linux machine and a Win95
machine. I connected the ADSL modem to the hub with a normal twisted pair
cable -- not the cable that came with the modem -- configured both machines
to get their IP address through dhcp and I now have two machines that
connect to the internet at a decent speed.
This setup does come with some caveats. My service provider states in
their service agreement that I am not to have more than four machines
connected to the ADSL modem at any one time. I also have to log one of my
machines in through webpage based authentication script to access their
news server, etc. This does not stop the other machine from accessing the
basic TCP/IP services but it appears I can only read news on one machine
at a time -- which is no big deal, the Win95 machine is basically for
games anyway.
I hope this helps,
Blair.
