I don't think the performance hit would be that great. When I have used
WinModems under Windows, my system hasn't shown any signs of degraded
performance. (I am not arguing for any support of Windows! I love LINUX!)
The only reason I propose the idea is that I have tried to introduce quite a
few friends with very limited income to Linux precisely because of it's
price tag. Because of their desire to set up their PCs "on-the-cheap" they
have *unwittingly* bought Winmodems. I hate to tell every one of them that
they have to buy a new modem to use on eof the greatest OSes in the world.
(Linux) That almost feels like when Microshaft tells you that you need to
buy some new piece of hardware to run Windows 98. I have learned that the
only modems that currenty work with Linux are modems that have a standard
COM port on them or are external. (Personally, I can't stand external
modems. I am one of those people that feels everything should be in one
box. Just MHO.)
The other reason I brought it up is that there are plenty of GREAT voice
mail modems out there that are Winmodem based. The only voice mail
applications I've seen for Linux work with a very limited and EXPENSIVE set
of hardware. I currently use Windows on one of my machines just so I can
have voice mail. If I could get this to work under Linux, I would abandon
Windows entirely. Now, I know this is a personal reason for wanting
Winmodems to work under Linux, but you've got to admit it would be great to
buy an "off-the-shelf" voice modem and use Linux as your voice messaging
system. Again, this is all my opinion. :)

I can understand that. Chances look pretty good that this will probably not
succeed anyway.
