See the very excellent book by Albitz and Liu, "DNS and BIND"
published by O'Reilly. The explanation you seek is on pages
146 onwards. Basically it is the statistics from the name server
"named"
In this snapshot, the first two figures are the time of this status dump
and the time of the previous dump (I think) followed by the number of each
type of request or reply -
RR replies received from relay
RNXD relay said "no such domain" to a request
RFwdR replies received giving answer to request
RFail server failed to reply to a name lookup request
RLame number of requests directed to your machine for a domain
that it replied that it was not authoritative for (this is a configuration
error that needs to be corrected)
etc.
