I use xdm. I specify the settings for my vt's in
/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. This is what my settings look like:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -bpp 32 vt7
:1 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 -bpp 32 vt8
You should be able to modify this to meet your needs.
