No, you shouldn't need to do this. However doing a fsck on the drive
before upgrading wouldn't be a bad idea.

Your home directory should be just fine.

I'm no expert, but my previous upgrades have always left resolv.conf as
it was.

There is the obvious one, backup the drive first. I always make
recursive backups of important directories on my second drive, such
directories as /etc, home directory and any ones I have made myself that
contain important data.
It never hurts to not rush the upgrade and take a couple of days to
ponder what you want to do.
