X normally runs on the first virtual terminal ABOVE those that getty
handles.

thus out of the box, you can often use ALT-F7.  If you add virtual
terminals (I use terminals on F1..F12) you can use RIGHT-ALT-F1.

the safest way is normally to do ALT-F1 followed by ALT-left_cursor.
