Try Ctrl-Alt-F8 to leave X, then Alt-F[1-6] to move to an available
console, then Ctrl-Alt-F7 to return to the active X session. If you
use Alt-F[1-6] to reach an available console while running X on
another console on the same machine and then return to the
console running X, you won't get in and will have to kill X and then
restart X.
