The usual reason is if there are cylinder count problems with the drive,
ie some part of the / partition would lie above the 1023 cylinder point.

Obviously not sure why he chose to do that, but one of my drives, even with
LBA working, has 1107 cylinders, and thus required some form of partitioning.
