I am presuming that you typed startx ...
Have you a window manager configured in your .xinitrc? X by itself
isn't enough, you nedd to run a wm on top.
There are zillions to choose from, but if you are running, for
example, fvwm, then the last line of your .xinitrc should be
exec fvwm

Ah, the sendmail hang.
I *think* (it's been a while and somebody please correct this if it is
off base)) that this is caused by having your hostname (sorry
HOSTNAME) in /etc/sysconfig/network set to the FQDN of your system
and a blank DOMAINNAME, as in
HOSTNAME=fred.dom.ain.org
DOMAINNAME=
If this is the case on your system then I think the sendmail hang goes
away when you chage the above to read:
HOSTNAME=fred
DOMAINNAME=dom.ain.org
That's how it is on my system and sendmail doesn't hang when I
startup.
