As its name implies, xdm is a manager for X displays (also called X
servers). It does its job using a protocol called XDMCP (X display
manager control protocol). One of the messages available with XDMCP is
called "IndirectQuery," (two others are DirectQuery and BroadcastQuery)
which is issued by a terminal server to a specific host running xdm.
When xdm receives an indirect query, it runs the chooser to issue direct
or broadcast queries on behalf of the X server and it formats a window on
the X display with the responses received from xdm running on other hosts
within a certain period of time. The user at the X display then tells the
chooser which host to use by highlighting the desired line and pressing
<enter> or by clicking the entry with mouse button 1.
That's the nutshell explanation. For more details, see "man xdm"
