RH v 5.1 and RAID1 - help?

I have been looking into running RAID1 on our server
(Red Hat v 5.1, kernel 2.0.35) and seem to be lost as
documentation is not too hot.
The raidtools do not compile; the kernel patches seem
to refer to source files that are not in my src/linux area.
What are the steps needed ? I recompiled the kernel
with the raid options selected, but the kernel will not
load since the raid1 disk has not been created yet.
all help/suggestions appreciated, as I have gone through
all the FAQ, README, HOWTO files without getting it
solved.
