*** Hmmmm... I've a strong feeling Lotus would be wise in making this port
really happen and start off with a bang; seems there're a lot of potential
clients being very impatient. However, in order to keep the emotions under
control I would like to stress that it's just an announcement in the press
at this moment. It could go anyway: Right now there's a real Linux hype
going on and everybody wants to jump on the Linux locomotive. So in order
to reserve a place a lot of companies announce the interest to...and then
nothing happens. This press article could mean anything. Either Lotus is
just reserving their "place" or they want to test the reaction of the
market(!!). Maybe it's a bit of both and they should "get what they asked
for". I think a (huge) collection of e-mails to Lotus telling them it's a
good idea will do wonders. It will show that it will be a commercial
success if they go on. Personally, Domino doesn't excite my red blood
cells very much at this point because I'm more into graphics but I realize
it would make a lot of you happy and earn Linux another point.
To finish off I would like to add mu opinion to the ongoing thread of
Microsoft being a threat to Linux and Microsoft's possible plans to kill
it. I read a nice article as a response to the Halloween documents in
which it was stated that Linux users are panicing without a reason:
Microsoft only poses a threat to Linux if we - the users - admit and
accept that market share is very important like it is to Microsoft. What
we don't realize is that Microsoft will beat them selves with the same
weapon they used against others. They won't be able to compete with Linux
simply because Linux isn't affected by market share. The big boys are
supporting Linux more & more and that's important. The main thing to do
today is make the opinion change and understand that there're credible
alternatives. This is happening now and, frankly, Linux just needs to lean
back and wait: All the work will be done by others. And don't fool
yourself with "yes, but M'soft has a huge war budget". Like with all
budgets, it's not endless (unless they start to print $ with Publisher)
and doesn't affect Linux.
Like the writer said in the response to the Halloween doc's, stop panicing
and get back to work!
Cheers,
Zoki.
