Like all numbering systems, the 4.XY means:

4 - release version.
X - Major revision
Y - Minor revision

The first in this series was 4.0, then came minor revision
number 4.01, 4.02, 4.03, 4.04, 4.05, 4.06 and I believe that
4.07 is the latest in the 4.0Y series. Although there may now
be a 4.08 out.

These are all revisions of the 4.0 version, no significant
features are added.

On the other hand, 4.5 is a major revision. It is actually a
step by Netscape to feel the market for the new flavor. If it
gets revised, you will (may) see 4.51, 4.52 etc.

The two are running concurrently. 4.06 got upgraded to 4.07
even after 4.5 was out. Basically, 4.5 is a different program.
There apparently is some input from the Mozilla Org (open source)
people into what went into 4.5.

4.0y has poor mail, and 4.5 is the release that addressed those
concerns the most (still not perfect, but better. 3.04 mail
was the best IMNSHO).

5.0 will be coming out sometime. It is purely the product of
Mozilla Org.

There you have it.
