Well, its not Linux, but Network Instruments Observer 
program is a nice little network monitor that runs on an 
old 486 66Mhz Win95 box on our network. Its our "network 
monitor" machine. One of the functions is to check all ip 
addresses within a range and will report back hardware 
addresses as well as ip addresses, among its other nifty 
tricks (including sniffing). Good, but pricey.
