<excerpt>Bad news from another Linux machine having (partial) boot
problems.
I'm running a single hard drive, single OS RH Linux box - LILO is set to
boot from
(obviously) /dev/hda. On booting from the HD, it makes it as far as
"LI", then....nothing.
On booting from floppy - everything is just fine.

I had a similar problem using an old Conner 1.6 gb drive. RH 5.1
installed itself normally but whenever I tried to boot from the hard
drive, LILO stopped with the message "LI". Changing the CMOS drive
settings solved the problem.
In my case, the Conner (now Western Digital) website showed two different
settings for cylinders/heads/sectors for the drive. One was for MS/DOS
and the other was for non-MS/DOS operating systems. (The label on the
hard drive only showed the MS/DOS settings.) When I changed the CMOS
drive settings to the non-MS/DOS operating settings, Linux booted
normally.
Hope that helps.
