Hola,

I have the same card running 1024x768 with the SVGA X server.  Do you
by chance have an old onboard video chip? And how are you setting up
the card: Xconfigurator of xf86config.

Xconfigurator would only recognize my old onboard Cirrus Logic, so
I had to run xf86config, and then hand-edit /etc/XF86Config so that
only the Riva 128 device and my chosen display settings were present.
Specified the hardware settings, and everything worked.

It's similar to building kernels:  make xconfig and make menuconfig are
easier, but make config is more reliable.  xf86config is the "make config"
for setting up your X display.

Apologies if all of this is obvious to you...
