Ed,
I have successfully got SMP going in both 2.0.34 and 2.0.35 kernels. 
You just have to comment out a few lines in the Makefile (they are @ the 
top). However if you want to be able to monitor them w/top or xosview 
you will need to run a patch on your tree and the procps utilities. Matt 
is correct that the 2.1.x kernels supposedly have better support.

Matt: I have been thinking about going to a 2.1.x kernel. Which one is 
most stable that I could run?
