Sound driver volume settings by default

I have noticed that using play I cannot seem to change the volume.  
I tryed different values in sox -v number  which is the program run
by play.  However if you run X and xmixer and lower the main volume it 
gets the desired volume.  Is there a way to adjust the volume without 
running X ?
