Altavista load stalls

Under Redhat 5.0 and the bundled version of Netscape Communicator I
attempt to load www.altavista.com. tcpdump shows the syn/ack handshake
taking place, as well as a few payload packets, but no meaningful
content is delivered thereafter - dead air, and quite reproducible.
Other major sites load without incident. I haven't yet studied in
detail the packet contents. All sessions are dialup. The machine has
no nic card, and no fixed IP in /etc/hosts. The host config is pretty
standard - I haven't tweaked anything that in my mind would cause this
site-specific stall.
A few folks I work with have seen the same effect. Moreover, dejanews
reveals another person or two who has seen this, and attributes the
effect to path mtu discovery considerations. I'm not convinced the two
are related.
Anyone else seen this?
