Emacs vs vi does lead to flame wars, but I don't know why.  It's 
simply a choice of tools.

Assuming either will do for the job at hand:

*In emacs, you must learn a lot of multi-key commands.  That can be 
a nuisance.

*In vi, commands are far simpler, but you must keep in mind whether 
you're in command mode or insert mode.  That can be a nuisance.

Personally I find vi the lesser nuisance, but I'm not bigoted about 
it.
