$ emacs-nox is the same as
$ emacs -nw is the same as
$ emacs with DISPLAY unset
The only advantage of emacs-nox, is that it's smaller.
Without Xwindows, emacs does not use the mouse at all, but
still has _all_ its capabilities through Ctrl key and Esc key mappings,
and plain commands.
All of emac's mouse capabilities depend on xwindows.
Gpm does not help emacs enough to bother with.
The emacs menu-bar you see in a console window starts
with F10. You might find it interesting.
There is a whole world of coolness inside emacs.
Without the xwindows menus, enjoy reading about
it, and have a guru help you. It takes time to
learn to love it.
I've used it for years. It can do absolutely anything,
just like Linux can, but it is a very religious area, and
I never try to convert people who prefer something else.
I also love vi for some things.
