Working without xwindows

Okay, I give up...

I've been trying to do most of what I do without using Xwindows. I
know this sounds a bit crazy, but I really like working on a simple and
clean interface.

Well, I finally have "enough" knowledge and things setup so I no
longer need the GUI tools to help me do this and that - with one
exception...

I use emacs extensively. Started with it and stayed with it and
its about the only editor I really know. But I can't make the blasted
thing (emacs) do much of anything unless I run it in Xwindows. I'm running
the standard RedHat 5.0 emacs installation - no tweaks. And I'm calling
emacs by entering "emacs" at the command line. As the mouse works on
everything else without the window manager, it seems to me that I might
either be calling the wrong emacs, or there is something wrong with my
installation - simply, I can't make emacs do anything unless I run it in
an Xwindow.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

	Brent Sims
