With Linux you can make a tar file of each partition. Tar normally preserves
all the owner,group and mode info.
If you prefer, you can use dd to
make a 'sector image' of *any* partition that is not mounted and not in use
in any other way. To image the root partition, you need to boot from a
different root partition, which could be Linux on another partition.
It can also be a self-contained Linux on a diskette - yes it's true.
