I'm so dizzy with amazement I still don't believe it! I feel so deeply
fuc*** I'll probably need a day or two to recover. It's been a long time
ago this kind of stuff happened to me: The last time was in the NT 4 days.
I'm still looking where I made a mistake in the process - until now it was
the human factor causing problems in Linux - but I have difficulties
identifing it in this case.
Due to another Zip disk going bad on me I copied the files it contained to
the harddisk. Then copied the whole shit back to another Zip. This was
being done within KDE. Since we're talking about approx. 100Mb of files -
GIMP, all the libs it needs, upgrades for Netscape, Pine, etc - I let the
thing work. After 15 min. (it's a // Zip) I notice a freeze. Checked the
Zip - it was full - and checked the harddisk - all the dir's were still
there. Not understanding what happened I decided to redo the copy, emptied
the Zip and noticed only then in horror "it" hadn't done a copy but a
move!!! Not only the files didn't fit on the disk whereas they did on the
other disk, but something went also wrong with the copy vs. move command.
A bit of brainstorming:
1/ KDE seems not to know when a destination is full in order to send an
error message. Instead it just stops, the copy pop-up window sits there
and nothing happens, giving the impression of a freeze.
2/ Either the commands copy & move are too close together or they are
mixed up. The result is that you do a move instead of a copy.
3/ The last fu**-up just reminded me of a thing that bugged me all along:
I don't like the political decission of the KDE team to call their latest
release a "ver. 1.0" whereas it's not! This release behaves a bit better
than the Beta 4 but is far from a stable version 1.0 release. It's the
kind of decission that fits "the folks from Redmond" but not Linux
developpers.
4/ Would the Zipdrive survive a flight out of a window on the 11th
floor...? No? Good!
Okay, having said this, I'm off to kill a chicken. Maybe it'll make me
feel better...
Zoki.
