I have the strong suspicion that the trick you're missing here is called
"reading"! Have you read the Red Hat Errata pages? The procedure described
there to install a kernel rpm is somewhat more elaborate than just rpm -i
*.rpm. E.g., you didn't mention whether you updated your lilo configuration
- which is probably the culprit here... Have a look at the errata pages at
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/errata.html
