I am trying to get PPP to work over a PCMCIA modem. I have the PCMCIA stuff
working OK. I can detect the modem and it configures properly. My problem
is that when i try to run /etc/ppp/PPP-ON (to start PPP) I get the
following message:
/usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP.
This could be because the PPP kernel module is not loaded
or because the kernel is not configured for PPP.
I am using the redhat 5.0 distribution. I read the README.Linux file in the
PPP-2.3.3 distribution and I also read the PPP How-to. My questions are as
follows:
1) Does the kernel in the Redhat 5.0 distribution come with PPP support or
should I be expected to re-compile the kernel as described in the
README-linux file?
2) How can I tell if I am using a kernel that already has been compiled for
PPP support?
3) How does the PPP kernel module get loaded? Is there a script file that
has the command to load the PPP kernel module? If so, where is it and what
is it called?
As you can probably tell, I am new to the Linux world so, even if these are
really basic questions, I would really appreciate any help someone would
like to offer.
TIA,
Dave
