*** <sigh>...There we go again...Which Windows product are we talking
about? I presume it's Windows 95, right? Sorry to contradict you but try
to make a complete newbie configure the 95's Dial-Up to get on Internet.
You also seem to forget that most users buy their PC pre-configured. The
picture would be different if they did that with their Linux OS too. I'm
talking from experience. I installed and preconfigured RH 5.0 for a
girlfriend 2 months ago, with KDE and the whole mickmack. This girl in
question has been a typewriter user before buying her first Windows based
computer. She never understood what was happening and the necessary
recoveries had to be done by her provider. This meant taking the box twice
a week to the shop. Then I told her to give Linux a try. Ever since the
first boot her Linux box is running 24/7, she's using the Linux features
she needs and has admitted it's a lot of fun. Strangely enough, she got to
understand much better what the PC is doing and even tryed to reconfigure
the authentication method of her ISP (chat --> PAP). Short of a typing
mistake in a config file she was able to do it herself. For the record,
she is a new user, a newbie, anything that could describe somebody who
only knows how to find the on/off switch.
BTW, she's also a professional writer and more into writing stories and
articles than messages to the different helpdesks. After sixtyfour days of
Linux she hasn't had one major problem. The only thing I can't seem to
explain to her is that she shouldn't ask me constantly if her Linux box
"could do this or that" but "how it can do it". ;-)
Cheers,
Zoki.
