Linux can be installed onto any partition on the first or second
physical hard drive (putting it on the third or higher hard drive requires
some real juggling and usually involves booting from a floppy).
Linux _can_ coexist with your exsiting Windows 95 setup. A few
people have documented how this is done. You can read about it in one of
the HOWTO documents [*1] at:
http://sunsite.unc.edu/linux/HOWTO/
I suspect you'll find some good examples of how this can be done
there. The only real rule is that you will need to free up some space for
at least one or two partitions; RedHat Linux cannot be installed on empty
space on your Windows partitions [*2].

very good reasons why this is discouraged.

Unix _is_ user friendly. It's just very selective about who its friends
are. And sometimes even best friends have fights.
