I wasn't aware that there WAS/IS a problem, other than 32bpp seems to be
unattainable. I have an ATI Expert 98 Rage II 8MB PCI card running with
the latest(I think) RPM'ed version of X, XFree86-3.3.2.3-18. (RH 5.1
Intel/6x86-233 CPU, 64M RAM, 'standard' h/w) running in 1600x1200x16bpp,
works great. I'm using the Mach64 server. The only problems I recall
having with installation was that:
1. I had to specify the amount of memory onboard, which seems to be the
case with a lot of 8+ MB video cards..no clue to why. If you let
Xconfigurator write the XF86COnfig file out for you it will comment out
the line for VideaRam or put some bogus number in like 256. Change this
for your card(uncommented)
2. I had to do some tweaking of mode lines fro my monitor(Hitachi
SuperScan 812) and card combo. Had no problems at 1280x1024, but for
1600x1200 it would not work properly at the highest clocks. Currently
running 1600x1200@85Hz, 105.77 kHz hsync.
I don't know what monitor you're running or resolution or more details of
your 'problem', but let me know if you want a copy of my cyrrent X config
via email. Hope this helps.
