Thanks, Tony and Darren --

notice I said "under program control" there -- I have code that passes a
'setgeometry' command for each app-window to the window manager. Manually
placing 30 or so widgets every time I run a program would get old *real*
fast ... (And those 30 widgets don't fit on a single screen, even at
1600x1200.)

AFAIK, neither KDE nor xfce will do that. If anyone has info to the
contrary, please let me know!
