My delete key

I'm using an i386 machine for Linux under X windows, bash shell.  My
delete key acts like a backspace key.  I thought the stty command to
correct this was: stty erase ^? echoe (where ^? is actually ^V DEL).

How do I make my delete key act like a delete key?
