UML: open-source notation tool?

I'm trying to teach myself OO programming, and for some of the top-down
stuff I've convinced myself that I could make use of a UML notation
tool. A quick browse through some general software indeces didn't turn
up anything, and I'm not sure of specific places to look, so I thought
I'd start with the OS where I intend to run the stuff.

So, are there any red-hatters out there doing UML, and can you recommend
an open-source tool? If no such thing exists yet, I think I could
provide the seed of some effort toward getting one started, or at least
providing a place for people to coordinate if there's a wider interest.

Thanks,
m
