I believe this is caused by recompiling your kernel and
"cat arch/i386/boot/zImage > /vmlinuz" and subsequently not running
lilo. I know of several people use this method to upgrade their
kernel. The problem occurs (I believe) if the new kernel is _bigger_
than the old one. Lilo no longer has a complete list of blocks that
contain the kernel image.
Personally, i use "make zlilo"
