wu-ftp anonymous - No file lisings...

When I first set up this box with 5.0 , anonymous ftp to localhost
worked - I got the ftp top level dir in /home/ftp fine.
I've been using wget with mirror options to suck down local copies of
the redhat update and contrib sites ( just the parts for my version and
platform )
I wanted to set autorpm to the local mirror ( as wget is doing
time/date/filesize checks as well as new files - it should settle down
to a few files a night ) but now when I login as anonymous I get no
entries for dir or ls
I went through the wu-ftp notes file and saw there was some problem with
ls and libc5 in some cases, but as this is a libc6 (glibc) system and it
worked before - I'm a bit lost as to the problem.
I went through the ftp* files in /etc and didn't see anything out of
place.
Any pointers?
